Attention all site owners!!! Google is ready to take their demand for a safer internet a step further. If you were not affected by the January 2018 update, read information here, you will be affected this time and it will begin around mid-year (June 2018).

Google wants to make the internet safer and less hackable by forcing websites to obtain an SSL certificate. What an SSL certificate does is encrypt your website so it is unable to be hacked. The SSL will give you an HTTPS for your URL.

Google is using its power to drive websites to make this change by

  • If a user goes to your website in Chrome browser, your website will come up as “Not Secure”.

  • Your Google ranking will drop. In fact, Google has been rewarding sites that already have HTTPS with a higher ranking.

Now you may be saying, “Yeah I heard about this and it only affects sites that collect payment or have a login,” and you are kind of correct. This was the first step in January 2018. And here’s a question to ask yourself, Do you use WordPress? If so, you need to log in, so even if you do not take payments you still have a login so you will be affected.

Googles next steps that you will see, by the end of the year, are ALL sites will be affected NO MATTER if you have a login or collect payment. And if you are thinking, well it’s just Chrome…think again. Other browsers will follow suit. So now is the time to act.
